On Wednesday night, a ‘Raat Kabza’ campaign was launched by the protesters to protest against the rape and murder of a junior female doctor at Arazi Kar Medical College.
During this time, a group attacked RG Kar Hospital. After this incident, there was an atmosphere of vandalism and violence in the hospital. Some youths broke the barricades and broke the gate of the emergency department and went inside and vandalized it.
The protest stage of the protesters was also demolished. During this, stones were pelted on the policemen, in which some policemen were injured. Police vehicles were also damaged. This incident created panic in the city during the ‘Raat Kabza’ campaign.
To control the situation, the police have cordoned off the entire area and Rapid Action Force (RAF) has been deployed. The police also fired tear gas shells and succeeded in driving away a part of the attackers.
It is also being alleged from a section of the hospital that the police initially delayed in reacting to the incident. Why did the police not take immediate action during this sudden attack? The answer to this question has not been found yet.
Trinamool Congress’s All India General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee has strongly condemned the violent incident that took place at midnight at RG Kar Hospital. He demanded the police to arrest the ‘criminals’ within 24 hours.
Abhishek Banerjee strongly condemned the incident on his ‘X’ handle and wrote, “The hooliganism that took place at RG Kar has crossed all limits. As a public representative, I have spoken to the Kolkata Police Commissioner and requested him to take action within 24 hours against the elements involved in this incident, regardless of their political background. The demands of the protesting doctors are justified. Demanding security from the government is a minimum right, it should be taken seriously.
As soon as the information about the incident was received, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal reached the spot. After taking stock of the situation, he told the media that DCP North also suffered serious injuries in this incident and he fainted. Blaming the media’s wrong reporting for the situations created during the agitation, he said that Kolkata Police is concerned about this matter.
Expressing displeasure, the Commissioner said that Kolkata Police has made every possible effort to investigate the RG Kar incident. I can say responsibly that my colleagues are working hard day and night to get to the bottom of this matter. They have left no stone unturned in collecting evidence. The main accused has already been arrested. We stand with the family and deny many kinds of rumors.
