On Thursday, the special crime branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Kolkata summoned five doctors for questioning. This step is part of the investigation into the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee that occurred last week. The CBI team also interrogated Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of the Tala police station, which oversees the area where the crime happened.
The focus on the local police has intensified as Abhijit Mondal was seen arriving at the CBI office earlier in the day. The role of the local police is under scrutiny following the incident.
Late at night, around 12:40 am, a large group of unidentified men entered the hospital. This happened during an ongoing protest by junior doctors. The attackers caused extensive damage by vandalizing the emergency department, the nursing station, and the medicine stores. They also destroyed CCTV cameras and ransacked a stage set up for the doctors’ demonstration, which had been ongoing since August 9.
In response to the chaos, the police used lathi-charges and tear gas to disperse the crowd. The police action, however, did not prevent significant damage to the hospital premises.
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee condemned the vandalism, calling it unacceptable. He urged Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal to ensure that everyone involved is arrested within 24 hours, regardless of their political affiliations.
As of now, nine people have been detained in connection with the vandalism. Commissioner Goyal has mentioned that a “malicious media campaign” may have worsened the situation. He defended the police actions, stating that his officers were also injured during the attack.
Governor Bose visited the hospital to assess the situation and spoke with the protesting doctors. He expressed his shock and disappointment over the violence, stating that it is a disgrace to society. Bose assured the public that justice would be served and promised to work together to resolve the issue.
