The rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has led to nationwide protests. The West Bengal government has been facing a lot of criticism for delaying justice and allegedly trying to save those involved.
Amid the ongoing protests and probe, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced a 12-hour Bandh in the state to demand capital punishment for the accused.

The bandh has been announced for today by the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist). This protest is against the vandalism of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and also to arrest all those involved in the crime.
This protest comes after a bizarre remark by Mamata’s aide and TMC leader Kunal Ghosh who said that rapes happen in other states as well and so this case in particular must not be highlighted.
In a statement, the Indian Medical Association said, ‘After the brutal crime in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and the hooliganism unleashed on the protesting students on the eve of Independence Day, the Indian Medical Association declares nationwide withdrawal of services by doctors of modern medicine from 6 am on Saturday i.e 17th of August to 6 am Sunday 18th of August, for 24 hours’.
Kolkata Police is consistently making arrests in the vandalism of RG Kar Hospital amid peaceful protests on Independence Day-eve. A total of 19 attackers have been arrested so far.
