On Tuesday the Central Government instructed the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) chairman Preeti Sudan to cancel the recent lateral entry advertisement.
The directive, issued under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comes amid increasing political controversy over the lateral entry process.
Jitendra Singh, the Minister of State for the Department of Personnel and Training, conveyed the Prime Minister’s stance that the lateral entry process must adhere to the principles of equity and social justice as said in the Indian Constitution.
Singh said in his letter, ‘For Prime Minister Modi, reservation in public employment is a cornerstone of our social justice framework aimed at addressing historical injustices and promoting inclusivity’.
‘Since these positions have been treated as specialized and designated as single-cadre posts, there has been no provision for reservation in these appointments. This aspect needs to be reviewed and reformed in the context of the Hon’ble Minister’s focus on ensuring social justice’, said Singh.
He said, ‘I urge the UPSC to cancel the advertisement for lateral entry recruitment issued on 17.08.2024’. He further added, ‘This step would be a significant advance in the pursuit of social justice and empowerment’.
What Is UPSC’s Lateral Entry ?
Lateral Entry signifies to the practice of selecting individuals from outside the traditional government service cadres to fill mid and senior-level positions within the bureaucracy.
Instead of selecting officers from within the civil service, lateral entry allows professionals from the private sector, academia, public sector undertakings (PSUs), state governments, and other non-governmental organizations to be appointed to key roles in the Union government.
