On Tuesday the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) issued guidelines to access service providers to prevent misuse of messaging services. Notably, the respective initiative of TRAI is important in the sense that the regulator has taken step to crack down on unauthorized telemarketing companies sending calls and messages to telecom customers for promotion.
In a statement, The Ministry of Communications said that TRAI has taken a tough stand on harassing telemarketers by calling repeatedly and has directed telecom companies to take special measures to prevent misuse of messaging services and protect consumers from fraud. TRAI has issued instructions to prevent misuse of messaging services and implement measures to protect consumers from fraudulent behavior.
TRAI has directed telemarketing companies to move telemarketing calls starting from 140 series to the online DLT platform by September 30, 2024, so that they can be monitored. Along with this, TRAI has also made provisions to prevent misuse of the framework prescribed for promotional material.
According to the telecom regulator, content registered under the wrong category will be blacklisted, and repeated violations will result in the sender’s services being suspended for a month.
According to the ministry, telecom regulator TRAI has issued a directive to all telecom companies to stop broadcasting messages containing URLs, OTT links or call back numbers that have not been authorized by the senders from September 1.
