On August 22, 2017, the Supreme Court declared triple talaq unconstitutional, marking a significant step in ending this practice within the Muslim community in India. The decision, made by a bench of five judges with a 3-2 majority, deemed triple talaq a violation of Articles 14 and 21 of the Indian Constitution, which ensure the right to equality.
