On Friday Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked the first National Space Day, celebrating India’s historic achievement in landing its first spacecraft on the Moon with the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
PM Modi took to social media to greet the nation. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Greetings to everyone on the first National Space Day. We recall with great pride our nation’s achievements in the space sector. It is also a day to laud the contributions of our space scientists”.

‘The government was committed to advancing the country’s space sector as our Government has taken a series of futuristic decisions relating to this sector and we will do even more in the times to come’, said PM Modi.
The Chandrayaan-3 mission was launched on July 14 and landed successfully on the Moon’s surface on August 23, making India the first country to land a spacecraft on the lunar south pole.
It also became the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the lunar surface after the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union. The theme selected for National Space Day in 2024 is “Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga”.

Taking to microblogging platform X, ISRO’s chairman Dr. S Somanath invited all citizens of the country to participate in activities organized by the space organisation and join the worldwide celebration.
Notably, the success on Chandrayaan 3 Mission came following the failure of Chandrayaan 2 as the mission did not go according to the plans due to a hard landing on the moon’s surface and high velocity issues.
During that time, Prime Minister Modi had visited the Satish Dhawan Space Centre to watch the live mission; and although the mission faced difficulties, the Prime Minister appreciated the scientists for their dedication and hard work.
With Chandrayaan-3’s success, India’s space sector enhances its economic prospects and international standing in lunar and broader space missions.
