The anger of the students over the rape and murder of the trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College has not subsided. The students have started protesting in Kolkata and Howrah to get justice.
A large number of protesters were taking out a protest march to the Secretariat Nabanna in Howrah demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The protesters named it ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ march. But the police did not allow them to protest.
It is believed that this would be the first time on the soil of West Bengal when the administration did not allow people to protest for justice for their daughters.
Despite not getting permission, many organizations and students protested. The students who came out for the Nabanna protest broke the police barricades. To control the students, the police lathi-charged the protesting students and also fired tear gas shells to disperse them. Water cannons were also used on them.
The police is currently trying to convince the students to move away from here. The police is telling them that their demonstration is illegal. While the police-administration is trying to push the protesters back on one hand, the agitators have sat on a dharna on the Howrah Bridge itself. The protesting students have put forward 3 demands. Justice for Abhaya, death penalty for the culprit and the resignation of Mamata Banerjee.
A large number of police forces have been deployed in view of the Nebanna demonstration. The government secretariat Nabanna and its surrounding areas have been converted into a fortress. Police have installed 5 aluminum barricades at other major places. The area will also be monitored through drones.
TMC has called the Nebanna rally a conspiracy of opposition parties. TMC has said that through this campaign, Ram-Left are all coming together to create chaos against TMC.
