Taking a massive action in the Visakhapatnam espionage case of Pakistani leadership, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday raided and searched 16 locations in seven states across the country in search of suspects. During this, the NIA also recovered many sensitive documents including 22 mobile phones. The NIA gave this information on Thursday.
According to the NIA, extensive searches were conducted at 16 places in Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Haryana in connection with the leak of confidential defense information through Pakistani ISI. The premises of the suspects who received funds from Pakistan for espionage activities in India were also searched.
The NIA took over the case in July 2023. The case was registered by the Counter Intelligence Cell, Andhra Pradesh in January 2021. The case involved the leak of sensitive important information.
According to the NIA, the NIA had filed a chargesheet against two accused, including an absconding Pakistani national Mir Balaaz Khan, on July 19, 2023. Investigation had revealed that Mir Balaj Khan was involved in the espionage racket along with arrested accused Akash Solanki.
On November 6, 2023, the NIA filed a supplementary chargesheet against two other accused, identified as Manmohan Surendra Panda and Alven. Panda has been arrested, while Alven, a Pakistani intelligence operative, is absconding. In May 2024, the NIA filed its second supplementary chargesheet against one of the accused, Aman Salim Sheikh, who had conspired with Pakistan Intelligence operatives.
