On August 30, 1659, the Battle of Deorai occurred between Dara Shikoh and his brother Aurangzeb, resulting in Aurangzeb’s victory and his ascension to the throne of Delhi. The struggle for power among Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s four sons—Dara Shikoh, Aurangzeb, Shah Shuja, and Murad—saw Aurangzeb using military strength and strategy to defeat his siblings. Shah Jahan had initially favored Dara Shikoh as his successor due to his liberal and inclusive ideology, contrasting sharply with Aurangzeb’s fanaticism. Dara Shikoh, who had been kept away from warfare and focused on religious and cultural studies, was ultimately executed by Aurangzeb’s assassins, with his body buried near Humayun’s tomb in Delhi.
