In the latest the Ministry of External Affairs dismissed allegations made in a CNN report that suggested India’s involvement in the flood situation in neighbouring Bangladesh.
Randhir Jaiswal, MEA spokesperson while addressing the weekly media briefing slammed CNN for its report and said the narrative is highly misleading and factually wrong.
MEA’s statement came after a CNN report that included misinformation about India’s involvement in the flood situation. Jaiswal said, ‘We have seen the CNN report on the flood situation in Bangladesh. It’s narrative is misleading and suggests that India is somehow responsible for the floods. This is factually not correct and ignores the facts mentioned in the press releases issued by the Government of India clarifying the situation’.
He further added, ‘The report also ignored that we have a regular and timely exchange of data and critical information between the two countries though existing joint mechanisms for water resources management’.
The CNN report said, ‘Dozens of people in Feni- which is only a few miles from the India border- accused New Delhi of releasing water from the Dumbur dam in neighbouring Tripura state with no warning’.
A 29-year-old IT worker, Shoriful Islam, who had returned to his hometown from Dhaka to help in rescue work had said, ‘They opened the gate, but no information was given’. On the allegations, India refused the claim that the dam release was deliberate and asserted rain as a contributing factor. The government further explained that a power outage and communications breakdown prevented them from issuing the warning to downstream neighbours.
