Violence has started again in the north-eastern state of Manipur. This time, Kuki militants have dropped bombs on a village called Kotruk using drones. Two people were killed in this attack, while 9 people including 2 security personnel are reported to be injured.
Around 2 pm on Sunday, Kuki militants opened indiscriminate fire from the top of the hill in the lower Kotruk and Kadangband valley. After that, bombs were thrown on the villagers through drones. Police have claimed that Kuki militants used high-tech drones in the attack. Such drones are used only in wars.
There is an atmosphere of panic in the village after the sudden attack as people’s houses have been damaged. People are angry against the state government. Local people say that the state government has assured to restore peace many times and claimed to restore peace many times but the situation on the ground still remains the same. People are forced to live in the shadow of fear.
The Manipur government has condemned the attack and assured strict action against those responsible. The Home Department of the Manipur government has issued a statement calling the incident a heinous act. The department says that the state government has taken such an act of terrorizing unarmed villagers very seriously. The government is making every effort to bring normalcy and peace in the state and immediate action has been initiated to punish those involved in the attack. At the same time, the local administration has imposed curfew in Imphal West district. The DGP has directed all SPs to remain on alert in all border areas.
There has been a long-standing dispute between the Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur regarding reservation. Violence broke out here for the first time on May 3 last year. After this, Manipur has been burning in the fire of violence many times. As of now more than 226 people have lost their lives in the violence.
