Over the past three days rainfall and flooding in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have resulted in 35 deaths resulting in the damage of infrastructure, submerged vast tracts of farmland, and left residents struggling for basic necessities. Both states are heavily busy in relief and rescue efforts after rain-related havoc in the states.
Due to rain-related incidents in Andhra Pradesh 19 individuals have lost their lives, while 16 fatalities have been reported in neighboring Telangana. On Monday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu announced that he has requested the central government to classify the flooding as a national calamity. He further said that over 17 people have died in the recent floods and rain-related incidents.
‘This is the most severe disaster I have witnessed’, said Naidu at a press conference at the NTR district collectorate. ‘We have faced events like the Hudhud hurricane and the Titli cyclone, but the human suffering and property damage here surpasses those events.”
‘Based on the requests received from local Administration due to flood like situation after incessant rains in Andhra Pradesh, Indian Naval Aircraft, Flood Relief Teams (FRTs) and diving teams from Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam have been deployed to augment the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts in the state. 4 helicopters (02 ALH & 02 Chetak) and one Dornier aircraft have been deployed for providing Search and Rescue (SAR) cover. So far 22 stranded personnel have been rescued and more than 1000 kg of food was air-dropped for stranded individuals. 10 FRTs have also been deployed to augment the rescue efforts. Along with Central forces and district officials, the NDRF provided food, drinking water, and other essential items to the flood-affected areas in Vijayawada through helicopters. The NDRF teams are providing food, drinking water and other relief materials to the flood victims in Vijayawada inundated due to the heavy rains.
