On September 4, 2012, Girish Hosanagara Nagarajegowda made history by winning India’s first medal at the London Paralympic Games. A left-legged amputee, Girish competed in the men’s high jump F-42 category, earning a silver medal with a jump of 1.74 meters using the scissors technique. This achievement made him the first Indian to medal in this event. His athletic career began with a bronze medal at a state-level sports meet in Dharwad, where he competed against able-bodied athletes. He later won a gold medal at the National High Jump Championship. Internationally, Girish’s first major achievement was a bronze medal at the 2006 Junior World Championship for the Disabled in Ireland, followed by gold medals in athletics competitions in Kuwait and Malaysia.
