Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader has been transferred to a location inside the country with heavy security measures. Notably, the transfer comes following the Israel’s announcement of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah’s death in a strike in south Beirut on Friday, according to the media reports. ‘The airstrike was precise and targeted Hezbollah’s leadership meeting at their headquarters in Dahiyeh, south of Beirut’, reported the Israeli military. Nasrallah had led Hezbollah for over thirty years. The Israeli military tweeted on X (formerly Twitter), ‘Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorise the world’.
On Friday, at least six people were killed and 91 were injured due to the airstrikes, as per Lebanon’s health ministry. This marked the biggest blast to hit the Lebanese capital in the past year, pushing the increasing conflict closer to full-scale war. On Saturday, Israel kept a heavy barrage of airstrikes against Hezbollah following Hezbollah launched dozens of rockets toward Israel. ‘It was assembling additional reserve soldiers as tensions escalated with Lebanon’, said the Israeli military.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short his visit to the United States to return to Israel following the strikes. He had addressed the United Nations just hours earlier, pledging that Israel’s intensified campaign against Hezbollah would continue which could possibly reduce hopes for an internationally backed cease-fire. The news of the explosions broke while Netanyahu was speaking to reporters after his UN address.
On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the killing of top Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during a targeted airstrike in Beirut. The IDF has eliminated the top command of the Iranian-backed group. The attack was carried out by Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets on Hezbollah’s central headquarters. The headquarters was reportedly underground under a residential building in the Dahieh area.
Hezbollah’s southern front commander Ali Karki was also killed in the attack. In a post on social media platform X, the IDF said, “Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world. The Israeli army confirmed that Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization and one of its founders, was killed along with Hezbollah’s southern front commander Ali Karki and additional Hezbollah commanders.”
