Cases of arbitrariness of the Waqf Board keep coming up every day, Center brought the Waqf Amendment Bill. A related case has come to light from Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala, where the future of more than 600 families of Cherai village is in serious crisis.
These families say that the Waqf Board is staking its claim on their lands, due to which they are in trouble while living. Cherai village is a beautiful village of fishermen, being a coastal village, it has been attracting tourists for a long time. Since the year 2022, the villagers of this village are not able to buy their land due to legal complications and are also not able to do any work related to the properties.
While on one hand the feeling of insecurity is increasing in the hearts of the people, the delay in justice has also disappointed them. Concern has been expressed on this matter by the Syro Malabar Church and the Catholic Bishop Council. The local people have to say on this matter that it is the land of their ancestors, everything was fine till the year 2022 but after that they were told that the land on which they have been living for years does not belong to them.
The villagers have written a letter to the JPC in which they have demanded a concrete solution from the government by making amendments as soon as possible. They have expressed hope that this crisis will help them find a solution. A letter has also been written to the JPC by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting regarding the recommendations related to the Waqf Amendment Bill.
The people of the village say that this land was bought by Siddiqui Sait in the year 1902, which was donated to Farooq College in the year 1950. At the same time, the dispute between the fishermen and the college was resolved by 1975. At that time the High Court had given a decision in favor of the college, after which the fishermen started buying land by paying money from the college.
It was suddenly claimed that this land does not belong to anyone but to the Waqf Board. Due to this, the fishermen of the village have become very upset, they have been deprived of all their revenue rights. Now they are forced to live like tenants on their lands and cannot even do any purchase or sale related to it.
