Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia on 23 and 24 October to attend the 16th BRICS summit. President Vladimir Putin has invited Prime Minister Modi for this summit to be held in Kazan under the chairmanship of Russia.
During the visit, the Prime Minister can also hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts and invited leaders of BRICS member countries. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this summit organized on the theme “Strengthening Multilateralism for Equitable Global Development and Security” will provide an important platform for the leaders to discuss major global issues.
This summit will provide a valuable opportunity to assess the progress of initiatives launched by BRICS and identify potential areas for future cooperation. The leaders of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries met for the first time in St. Petersburg, Russia in the year 2006.
After a series of high-level meetings, the first BRIC summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia in the year 2009. South Africa was accepted as a full member at the BRIC Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York in September 2010. After this, the BRIC group was renamed BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).
