The First Kashmir War between India and Pakistan began on October 22, 1947, just two months after India gained independence. The conflict arose over the merger of Jammu and Kashmir with India. On October 22, 2008, India successfully launched its first lunar mission, Chandrayaan-1, from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The Chandrayaan program was first announced by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003, and the mission was approved by the Indian government in November of that year.
