Delhi: India has issued an advisory urging its citizens to avoid travelling to Syria in light of the ongoing violence and unrest in the Middle Eastern country.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) advised all Indian nationals to refrain from traveling to Syria until further notification.
The MEA also urged the stranded Indians to leave the country on the earliest available commercial flights.
In addition, an emergency helpline number and email ID have been issued for Indian nationals to contact the Indian Embassy in Damascus. With nearly 90 Indian nationals residing in Syria, including 14 working with UN organizations, the MEA has confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with its citizens to ensure their safety.
The civil war in Syria, which has been ongoing since 2011, has recently seen a resurgence of violence by rebel forces, leading to hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths and millions displaced.
The leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebel group has stated that their goal is to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
