Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to respond to a discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India, which will take place in the Lok Sabha on December 13. The debates will be held on December 13 and 14 in the Lok Sabha, and on December 16 and 17 in the Rajya Sabha, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah slated to lead the discussion in the Upper House on December 16.
Both houses of the parliament met with an unscheduled premature adjournment for the day on Monday following protests from the members of the Opposition. The protesting members held that their request for a discussion on varied issues was being ignored by the treasury benches. These entailed farmers’ protests in Delhi and the ongoing Manipur conflict, but more prominently: the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) assertions about senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s Forum of the Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP) Foundation alleged association with the George Soros Foundation. The ruling has held it as an attempt “to destabilise India”.
Before concluding for the day, as many as three unscheduled adjournments had prevented any significant being transacted on Monday. In fact, in the lower house, Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw’s response to the discussion on the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024 has been pending since Thursday last week.
