On Friday, a local court granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, and Abhijit Mondol, the former officer in charge of the Tala police station, in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at the campus.
The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) granted bail to Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondol after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not submit a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period. The court granted them bail on a surety bond of Rs 2,000 each and said the accused would have to appear before the CBI when they are called by the central agency.
However, Ghosh will remain in jail in another case of alleged financial irregularities at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in the court, CBI stated its investigation against the accused in the R G Kar rape and murder case is still ongoing.
Massive protests erupted across the country after the crime took place on August 9 this year. The Kolkata police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, a day after the rape and murder of the junior doctor. Later, CBI arrested Sandip Ghosh for allegedly destroying evidence in the case. Mondal has been accused of alleged delay in filing of FIR in the rape and murder of R G Kar Hospital doctor.
