Washington, 24 December (HS): US and UK have once again raised questions about Pakistan’s military court, which has been under question for a long time. A day earlier on Monday, the Pakistani military court sentenced 25 supporters of Imran Khan to two to ten years. They were accused of targeting military installations during the protests that took place after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2023.
Regarding the decision of Pakistan’s military court on Monday, the US State Department said that Washington is very concerned that a military court has sentenced Pakistani citizens for participating in the protests on May 9, 2023.
The UK Foreign Ministry said that there is a lack of transparency, independent investigation in prosecuting civilians in military courts and it undermines the right to a fair trial. The European Union has also made a statement on this decision.
The European Union said that these punishments do not match Pakistan’s commitments under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
It is noteworthy that the supporters of Imran Khan, lodged in Pakistan’s Adiala Jail, became furious over his arrest on 9 May 2023. Fiercely opposing the arrest, his supporters targeted several military establishments and vehicles. His supporters are constantly protesting for the release of Imran Khan. Imran Khan has been accused in several cases since he was removed from the post of Prime Minister in 2022. Imran’s party PTI supporters have been continuously protesting against this.
