Jakarta, 7 January 7 (H.S.): The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) on Monday officially terminated Shin Tae-yong’s contract as head coach of the national men’s football team. PSSI President Erick Thohir said the association needed a coach who could implement a unified strategy agreed upon by all players and promote more effective communication.
He said, “What we are doing today is for the good of the national team.” Thohir said the decision to sack Shin was taken after a long evaluation taking into account several factors. Shin, who began his tenure with PSSI in December 2019, helped Indonesia’s world rankings rise from 173rd to 127th.
In the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, Indonesia is currently third in a six-team group with six points from six matches. The new coach will be officially announced on January 12.
