Washington, 8 January (H.S.): US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Tuesday at a press conference in Mar-a-Lago, Florida that he plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, citing its “beautiful ring” and expansive coverage. He did not provide a timeline for this change.
Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed support for the name change and pledged to introduce legislation in Congress. In addition, Trump discussed his interest in pursuing the acquisition of the Panama Canal and Greenland, as well as the possibility of turning Canada into a U.S. state.
These remarks were met with criticism from Canada’s minister of foreign affairs, Melanie Joly, who stated that they showed a lack of understanding of what makes Canada a strong country. The press conference, held in the ornate living room at Mar-a-Lago, highlighted Trump’s ongoing expansionist agenda as he prepares to take office on January 20.
