Dhaka, 15 January (H.S.): The Bangladesh Supreme Court has made a landmark decision by acquitting former prime minister Khaleda Zia of corruption charges. Zia, who is also the Chairperson of the BNP party, had been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the High Court, but the Supreme Court overturned this ruling after reviewing her appeal.
The 79-year-old leader, along with other suspects including her son and party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, were accused of embezzling funds from the Zia Orphanage Trust. The verdict has been met with mixed reactions, with supporters of Zia celebrating her acquittal while others raising concerns over the independence of the judiciary.
