Kolkata, 17 January (H.S.): Sealdah’s Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court is set to announce the much-anticipated verdict in the R G Kar Medical College rape and murder case on Saturday, January 18. The case has been in the spotlight since August 9, 2024, when the body of a female doctor was discovered on the hospital premises, sparking widespread outrage across West Bengal.
The initial investigation by Kolkata Police led to the arrest of a civic volunteer Sanjay Roy within 24 hours. The case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Calcutta High Court. The CBI’s probe culminated in a charge sheet identifying the arrested civic volunteer as the sole accused in the heinous crime.
The court proceedings have seen testimonies from 50 individuals, including the victim’s father, investigating officers, forensic experts, and several colleagues of the deceased. Following months of investigation, the trial commenced on November 11, 2024, and is now nearing its conclusion.
Public anger over the incident resulted in unprecedented protests across the state, with citizens organizing rallies, human chains, and torch marches. The agitation even led to disruptions in cultural and sporting events, including the cancellation of a high-profile football derby in Kolkata.
The court’s decision will also determine whether the accused will receive sentencing on the same day or later. Observers are keenly watching as the verdict could either validate public trust in the judicial process or spark fresh waves of protests.
