Delhi, 18 January (H.S.): On Saturday morning, Delhiites in some areas woke up to dense fog and persistent cold weather, causing low visibility conditions that disrupted flight and train operations in the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted very foggy conditions for the day with temperatures around 11 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature for the day is expected to drop to 7 degrees Celsius, while the maximum is likely to reach 19 degrees Celsius.
The weather department has forecasted foggy conditions for the next three days, followed by rain or thunderstorms on January 22 and 23. Due to the fog, several trains and flights at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport were delayed.
However, the air quality index of Delhi improved on Friday after rains, resulting in the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) lifting restrictions under Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Despite this improvement, CAQM has warned that AQI is likely to remain in the lower end of the Very Poor category in the coming days due to favorable meteorological conditions and strong wind speeds. This cold wave is not limited to Delhi as temperatures have dropped in North India and thick layers of fog have engulfed several states, including Uttar Pradesh where the ongoing Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj is being held.
