On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Subhas Chandra Bose on his 128th birth anniversary on stating his contribution to India’s freedom movement is unparalleled.
Remembering Bose, the great freedom fighter who led the ‘Azad Hind Fauj’ to fight the British, Modi said he epitomised courage and grit. PM Modi said, “His vision continues to motivate us as we work towards building the India he envisioned”. Bose’s birth anniversary is commemorated as ‘Parakram Diwas’.
Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January 23, 1897, in Cuttack, Orissa. Bose was a nationalist leader who joined the nationalist movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian National Congress in 1921. After returning from England, he became Congress president in 1938, leading to his various attempts to restore India’s independence. To honour Bose for his efforts in restoring Indian freedom, in 2021, the government announced that 23rd January will be celebrated as ‘Parakram Diwas.’
Additionally, this is an official holiday in West Bengal, Tripura, Jharkhand, Assam, and Odisha, with the day marked across India, showcasing Netaji’s role in India’s independence through assemblies, parades, and special functions. In 2025, a grand celebration will take place from January 23-25 at Barabati Fort in Cuttack, honouring Netaji’s legacy in his birthplace, and will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Mohan Charan Majhi.
