Kampala, January 28 (HS): Chinese-born basketball player Jens Asinde has been included in Uganda’s national women’s basketball team “Gazelles” for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone 5 qualifiers.
Asinde, who became part of China’s Henan Phoenix team last October, will play in the qualifiers to be held between February 3 and 8 in Giza, Egypt. The tournament will compete with Egypt, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania and Burundi for the only berth in the continental showpiece.
Uganda’s new coach Nicholas Ntuhereza described Asinde’s experience as important for the team.
He said, “Having an experienced player like Asinde in the team is very beneficial for us. She can play a key role in the team’s success.” The 29th edition of the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket will be held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The top four teams of this tournament will make it to the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers.
With the inclusion of Asinde, the chances of the Ugandan team are considered strong, as his international experience can give the team an extra edge.
