Galle, January 29 (HS): Australia’s acting captain Steve Smith has become the fourth Australian batsman to complete 10,000 runs in Test cricket. He achieved this feat on Wednesday, the first day of the first Test match being played against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium.
Before Smith, Ricky Ponting, Allan Border and Steve Waugh have joined this historic club. He touched this milestone in his 115th Test, which puts him in second place after Brian Lara in terms of crossing this figure at a fast pace.
Among active players, Smith has become the second highest Test run-scorer after Joe Root (12,972 runs).
Australia’s strong start
In the first Test against Sri Lanka, Australia won the toss and decided to bat first. At the time of writing the news, Australia had scored 239 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.
Usman Khawaja is unbeaten on 102 runs and Steve Smith on 59 runs. Travis Head played an important half-century innings of 57 runs.
