Dhaka, 06 February (HS): In the capital of Bangladesh, from yesterday evening till late night, the residence (Dhanmandi-32) of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s father and the founder of the country, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was vandalised. Not satisfied with this, the mob torched his residence. Along with this, Hasina’s husband’s house was also set on fire. The interim government of the country remained a spectator during this time. Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since the month of August last year.
According to the news of The Daily Star newspaper, this entire uproar took place during Sheikh Hasina’s online address. Thousands of protesters reached Dhanmandi-32. The residence was vandalised. The protesters said that this residence is a pilgrimage site of fascism. It should be demolished. This entire campaign has been named ‘Bulldozer Procession’. Sheikh Hasina’s address was to begin at 9 pm. Even before that, thousands of protesters stormed Bangabandhu’s residence. They used shovels and hammers on the residence. Eyewitnesses said that a mural of Bangabandhu Mujibur was also destroyed during this time. Some people set the building on fire at around 9:30 pm. A crane and an excavator arrived shortly before midnight. The incident was reported about two and a half hours later. By then, some parts of the residence had been razed to the ground.
According to some social media posts, Hasina is conducting anti-Bangladesh activities from Delhi. This incident is a response to this. The protesters raised slogans during this time. The word Delhi was also mentioned in the slogans. The protesters have demanded that the Awami League should not be allowed to participate in any election in Bangladesh. During all this chaos, the police remained a spectator. No firefighters reached the spot till midnight. Some army personnel did reach the spot at around 9:30 pm but later they left. Interim government home adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Sajjat Ali and Additional Commissioner SN Najrul Islam refused to comment on the uproar.
The bulldozer procession was called on social media by the “Basherkela” Facebook group, People’s Activists Coalition (PAC) spokesperson Ratul Mohammad, July Revolutionary Alliance, Students Against Discrimination convenor Hasnat Abdullah, Paris-based vlogger Pinaki Bhattacharya, etc. According to reports, protesters also set fire to Sudha Sadan, the residence of Sheikh Hasina’s late husband and nuclear scientist MA Wazed Mia in Dhanmondi, at around 11:00 pm. Fire department official Rakibul Hasan has confirmed this. He said the department has also received information about setting fire to Dhanmondi 32.
