New Delhi, February 11 (HS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the government is planning to identify mule accounts using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to prevent cyber crime. Home Minister Shah chaired the meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs on the subject of ‘Cyber Security and Cyber Crime’ in New Delhi on Tuesday. In the meeting, Amit Shah said that efforts are underway to create a system to identify mule accounts with the use of artificial intelligence and coordination with the Reserve
Bank and all other banks. Arrangements will also be made to close the mule account before it is operated. The government has also ensured that people can be alerted about cyber crimes by giving them information about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mantra of ‘stop, think and then act’.
The Home Minister said that a total of 1 lakh 43 thousand FIRs have been registered on the I4C portal and more than 19 crore people have used this portal. He said that 805 ‘apps’ and 3266 website-links have been blocked on the recommendation of I4C for national security reasons.
Apart from this, 399 banks and financial intermediaries have been onboarded. Also, more than 6 lakh suspicious data was shared, more than 19 lakh mule accounts were caught and suspicious transactions worth Rs 2038 crore were stopped. It is noteworthy that mule account is a bank account used to hide money earned through fraud.
Amit Shah said ,”Today India has become the third largest country in the world in terms of digital landscape. The digital economy contributes 20 percent to India’s total economy. The Home Ministry’s goal is to reduce cyber crime cases and their FIRs to zero. We have adopted four types of strategies to deal with cyber crime, which include convergence, coordination, communication and capacity. All these are being implemented with clear objectives and strategic approach. Inter-ministerial and inter-departmental coordination within the Home Ministry has been strengthened, ensuring seamless communication and smooth flow of information.”
Shah said that the healthy tradition of sharing of information between the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Electronics and IT, CERT-IN, I4C and departments like telecom and banking has helped in successfully dealing with many cyber crime cases. The Home Minister stressed the importance of increasing awareness among the public to prevent cyber crime and requested all the members of the Committee to publicise the I4C helpline number 1930. In view of cyber financial fraud, the ‘1930’ helpline provides a one-point solution offering various services like card blocking.
Amit Shah said that cyber crime forensic training laboratories have been established in 33 states and Union Territories. 101,561 police officers have registered on the Cytrain platform, a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform, and more than 78,000 certificates have been issued.
The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai and Bandi Sanjay Kumar, members of the committee, Union Home Secretary and senior officials of the Home Ministry.
