On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron jointly inaugurated the new Indian consulate in Marseille city. PM Modi and President Macron interacted with the members of the Indian diaspora following inaugurating the new Indian consulate in Marseille city.
“The two leaders stressed, in particular, the urgent need for the reform of the United Nations Security Council and agreed to coordinate closely in multilateral fora, including on UNSC matters. France reiterated its firm support for India’s permanent membership of the UNSC,” reads a joint statement by India and France.
PM Modi and President Macron reaffirmed their strong commitment to India-France strategic partnership. “Acknowledging the progress in developing artificial intelligence, India and France will seek to ensure that norms and standards governing their use reflect democratic values, and harness the potential of artificial intelligence for human development and common good,” read India-France Declaration on Artificial Intelligence.
“President @EmmanuelMacron and I inaugurated the Indian Consulate in this vibrant city, marking a new chapter in India-France ties. This consulate will serve as an important bridge, strengthening our cultural, economic and people-to-people connections,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

“Marseille’s links with India are well known. During the First World War, it was an important base for Indian troops. This city has a close link with Veer Savarkar as well. On this special opening, I thank the French Government and congratulate the Indian diaspora,” he added.
