Bhubaneswar, February 17 (HS): The Indian women’s hockey team will take on Spain in their next matches of the FIH Pro League 2024-25. The matches will be played on February 18 and 19 at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium here. The Indian team is looking forward to the match and will try to move up the points table by registering a win.
The Salima Tete-led Indian women’s hockey team missed out on a bonus point in their second match after getting off to a great start with a thrilling 3-2 win over England in their first match. The team lost 2-1 in the shootout after the match was tied 2-2 in the stipulated time. The Indian women’s team is currently eighth in the table with four points from two matches.
Indian women’s hockey team vice-captain Navneet Kaur, who is the team’s top scorer so far, is in great form. They have scored a goal each in both the matches and provided stability to the Indian forward line. Spain, on the other hand, have registered two consecutive wins against Germany in the India leg of the FIH Pro League. They won back-to-back 2-1 matches over Germany, which has boosted their confidence ahead of the matches against India.
Despite their excellent performance recently, Spain’s performance has been mixed overall. Out of the six matches played so far, only two have been wins and one shootout win. Spain, who are fourth in the table with eight points, will look to further strengthen their position.
Speaking on the upcoming matches against Spain, Indian captain Salima Tete said,” we are eagerly waiting for our matches against Spain. They (Spain) are a tough team and we know it is going to be a challenging match. However, our team is ready for the challenge. We have analyzed our performance against England and identified the areas where we need to improve, especially in converting penalty corners into goals. We are focusing on strengthening our defense and making the most of our scoring opportunities. We will do our best to get important points, “he said.
