Parvesh Sahib Singh, popularly known as Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP Supremo Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi, took oath as a Delhi Minister. Notably, Verma won the Delhi seat by a margin of over 4,000 votes, according to the poll body. The Bharatiya Janata Party has returned to the national capital after 27 years.
Parvesh Verma is the son of Sahib Singh Verma, a former Delhi Chief Minister and senior vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was one of the top contenders for the post of Chief Minister and has served in the BJP for 30 years. His uncle, Azad Singh, was the mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and has contested elections on a BJP ticket from Mundka.
Verma has served as a two-time Member of Parliament from West Delhi. In the 2013 Assembly polls, he was elected as an MLA from the Mehrauli seat. The Bharatiya Janata Party overall won a total of 48 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party secured 22. The Congress failed to gain ground and is not leading in any seat.
On Thursday, first-time MLA Rekha Gupta took oath as the fourth woman chief minister of Delhi, days following the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) returned to power in the national capital after over 26 years, ending the 10-year rule of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The grand ceremony was held at the iconic Ramlila ground and was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of 20 states, and other senior BJP leaders and workers.
Rekha Gupta was chosen as the Leader of the House in the Delhi Assembly at the BJP legislature party meeting late Wednesday evening. The 50-year-old then met Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena and staked claim to form the government. Gupta became the fourth woman chief minister of the capital following Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress) and Atishi (AAP).
