Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Hyderabad House in Delhi on Friday. The two leaders reviewed the progress of the ongoing negotiations for a comprehensive trade agreement and discussed strategies to enhance trade and investment relations.
During a joint press statement with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this visit of the President of the European Commission and the College of Commissioners to India is unprecedented. This is not only the first visit of the European Commission to India but also its first such comprehensive participation in any country. This is one of the first foreign visits of the new dispensation of the Commission.
He said that the strategic partnership between India and the European Union, which has been going on for two decades, is natural and spontaneous. Its basis is trust, shared belief in democratic values, shared commitment to shared progress and prosperity. About 20 ministerial meetings have been held in this regard since yesterday.
The Prime Minister said that several decisions have been taken to elevate and accelerate our partnership. A blueprint of cooperation on trade, technology, investment, innovation, green growth, security, skills and mobility has been prepared. He said that concrete steps will be taken to take forward the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, i.e. “IMEC”, in the field of connectivity. I am confident that “IMEC” will prove to be an engine promoting global commerce, sustainable development and prosperity.
The Prime Minister said that our huge cooperation on the stock market related to defense and security is a symbol of friendship and trust. We will move forward for cyber security, maritime security and anti-terrorism cooperation. He said that both sides are unanimous on the importance of peace, security, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. We welcome the decision of the European Union to join the “Indo Pacific Oceans Initiative”.
