West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu was physically attacked by members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) at Jadavpur University on Saturday. The incident occurred as Basu was leaving a program organized by the West Bengal College & University Professors Association (WBCUPA), a pro-Trinamool organization. His vehicle was vandalized, and he sustained injuries from bricks thrown by protesters. Several professors and students were also hurt in the clash.
Protesters, demanding immediate student body elections, blocked Basu’s car, deflated its tires, and climbed onto its bonnet. When Basu attempted to engage with them, violence erupted, leading to damage to his convoy. He was later taken to SSKM Hospital for treatment.
During the event, SFI members disrupted Basu’s speech, throwing chairs and vandalizing the venue. Reports indicate that some professors were physically attacked, including Professor Omprakash Mishra, who was chased by stick-wielding protesters. A female professor’s saree was allegedly torn, and a student suffered head injuries.
Condemning the violence, Basu stated that disciplinary action would be taken. Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh also denounced the attack, calling the SFI’s actions “uncivilized” and warning against mistaking TMC’s restraint for weakness.
