After 16 days of rescue efforts, officials recovered the body of one of the eight men trapped in the collapsed tunnel in Telangana. The victim was identified as Gurpreet Singh from Punjab’s Tarn Taran district.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced financial aid of Rs 25 lakh for his family.
The workers were trapped when a part of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Nagarkurnool collapsed on February 22.
Gurpreet’s body was found near the broken tunnel boring machine. The search dogs from Kerala Police helped locate the spot.
Rescue operations have been difficult due to sludge, debris, and water seepage. Over 300 personnel from NDRF, SDRF, and the Army are involved in the search.
On Monday, robots and cadaver dogs were used to find the remaining workers. The search continues for the other trapped men.
