The Sports Ministry has lifted the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and restored its recognition as the official body for the sport. The decision comes after a review of WFI’s compliance with regulations.
With this move, WFI President Sanjay Singh, a close associate of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has regained full control of the federation.
The government suspended WFI on December 24, 2023, and asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to form an ad-hoc committee to manage its affairs. Now, WFI will resume its responsibilities but must follow certain conditions.
The ministry has directed WFI to reverse changes made during the suspension period and ensure a fair balance of power. It must also keep any suspended or non-elected individuals away from federation activities.
Additionally, the selection process for international events must be fair and transparent, following Sports Code regulations. WFI has four weeks to comply with these orders. The ministry emphasized that WFI must follow governance policies and prioritize athlete welfare. Any violations could result in legal action.
