The 353rd Governing Body meeting of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from March 10 to March 20, 2025. This meeting gathers representatives from governments, workers, and employers to address critical issues in the world of work.

The Indian delegation, led by Sumita Dawra from the Ministry of Labour and Employment, highlighted India’s commitment to labor welfare, social justice, and quality employment generation. India expressed support for the UN-led Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, emphasizing its advancements in social protection, which currently covers 48.8 percent of the population.

Key schemes, including EPFO and PM Jan Arogya Yojana, were acknowledged for their significant contributions.

India advocated for improved global cooperation in managing migration and securing rights for migrant workers, promoting ILO’s initiative for a Tripartite Global Forum on Migration. The country reaffirmed its dedication to a chemical-free planet and presented measures taken under the Factories Act and Occupational Safety Code.

Bilateral discussions ensued with ILO officials, including a meeting between Ms. Dawra and DG Gilbert F. Houngbo, where they addressed the need for a focus on in-kind benefits and showcased India’s role in promoting Responsible Business Conduct. India’s financial commitment to ILO’s initiative on international occupational classification was also noted, aimed at enhancing global employment opportunities for Indian youth. The delegation included Rakesh Gaur, Deputy Director, Ministry of Labour & Employment.
