Mumbai Police are set to issue a second summons to stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on Wednesday. He is being asked to appear before an investigating officer regarding a case filed against him for a controversial joke about Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde.
Kamra was earlier asked to appear on Tuesday but requested a week’s time through his lawyer. The police rejected his request. The summons will be issued under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), according to ANI.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT)’s mouthpiece Saamana criticized the government’s response. It highlighted PM Modi’s statement that “criticism is the soul of democracy” and called the action against Kamra an “extreme response.”
A controversy erupted when Kamra’s video went viral. Shiv Sena workers vandalized Habitat Studio in Mumbai, where Kamra performed. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) later demolished part of the venue, citing irregularities.
Police have filed an FIR against Kamra under sections related to public mischief and defamation. They also arrested 11 members of Shiv Sena’s youth wing for vandalism.
