Ahmedabad Rural police have booked IIT Delhi Professor Yama Dixit in connection with the death of PhD scholar Surabhi Verma, nearly four months after an excavation pit collapsed on them near the Lothal Harappan site. The incident occurred on November 27, 2024, during their palaeoclimatology research.
An FIR was registered on March 23 following a complaint by Surabhi’s father, Ram Khelawan Verma, a government teacher from Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. He had repeatedly urged police to investigate his daughter’s death.
Dixit has been charged under BNS sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence) and 125(a) (endangering life or personal safety of others). Police officials stated that she would be issued a notice to appear for questioning at Koth police station.
