The Indian government is considering lowering import duties on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, Bourbon whiskey, and Californian wine. This move is part of ongoing trade talks with the United States to strengthen economic ties.
Earlier, India reduced the import duty on Harley-Davidson bikes from 50% to 40%. Now, officials are discussing a further cut to make these premium motorcycles more affordable for Indian buyers.
The import duty on Bourbon whiskey was previously reduced from 150% to 100%. Negotiations are underway to lower it even more, making American whiskey more competitive in India’s liquor market. Similarly, the US is pushing for reduced tariffs on Californian wine to expand its presence in India.
Beyond these products, trade discussions also include increasing US exports of pharmaceuticals and chemicals to India. While the US aims to expand its market share in India’s pharmaceutical sector, India seeks better trade terms for its exports to America.
In recent years, India’s pharmaceutical imports from the US have fluctuated, with a sharp rise in 2021-22, followed by a drop in 2022-23, and a slight recovery in 2023.
If the tariff cuts are approved, American products could become more accessible to Indian consumers, but Indian drug manufacturers may face increased competition.
