The 64th CCH Sessions Court in Bengaluru rejects the bail application of Kannada actress Harshavardhini Ranya alias Ranya Rao for her alleged involvement in a gold smuggling case on Thursday. This follows the verdict of the Special Court for Economic Offences that rejected of her bail plea on March 14. Ranya had initially sought bail from the Magistrate Court, but it was denied.
This is the third time the court has adjourned her bail plea. Ranya Rao was arrested from the Bengaluru International Airport on March 3 for the possession of 14.2 kg gold worth ₹12.56 crore. She arrived in India from Dubai and was alleged to be a part of a high-profile gold smuggling.
During her custody, the actress confessed to the charges against her. She told the officials in detail how she received a call from an unknown number and asked her to smuggle gold from Dubai. She further revealed that she learned the trick of smuggling from a YouTube video.
Following this, searches were conducted at her residence, where officials recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore and Indian currency amounting to ₹2.67 crore.
