- The bill allows government control over places frequented by foreigners and ensures better immigration management.
The Lok Sabha passed the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025 on Thursday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah explained that the bill will help the government keep updated information on every foreigner visiting India and strengthen the country’s security.
The bill, introduced by the Union Home Ministry, is a new law to manage all matters related to foreigners and immigration. Amit Shah said that while India welcomes foreigners coming for business, education, or investment, those who threaten the country’s security will face strict actions. He added that India is not a “Dharamshala” (a place for shelter).
He also stated that if people like the Rohingyas or Bangladeshis come to create unrest, strict action will be taken against them. The bill gives the government control over places often visited by foreigners and allows the authorities to close or restrict access to these places if needed.
The bill was first introduced on March 11 by the Union Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai. However, Congress MP Manish Tewari and TMC MP Sougata Roy opposed the bill, saying it goes against some fundamental rights in the Indian Constitution.
The bill ensures that the government keeps track of who is visiting India, why they are here, and how long they plan to stay. This will help the country better manage immigration and security.
