Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-nation visit next week, beginning with Thailand on April 3-4 for the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, followed by a visit to Sri Lanka from April 4-6.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the visit in a statement on Friday, noting that Modi is traveling to Bangkok at the invitation of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. During his visit, he will participate in the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit, which will be held on April 4 and is hosted by Thailand, the current BIMSTEC Chair.
This will be Modi’s third visit to Thailand and marks the first in-person meeting of BIMSTEC leaders since the 4th BIMSTEC Summit held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2018. The 5th edition, hosted by Sri Lanka, was conducted virtually on March 22 due to pandemic-related constraints.
The theme for the 6th BIMSTEC Summit is “BIMSTEC – Prosperous, Resilient and Open,” with leaders expected to discuss strategies for enhancing regional cooperation across sectors including trade, security, connectivity, and climate resilience. The meeting will bring together heads of government from all BIMSTEC member states, including India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Following his engagements in Thailand, PM Modi will travel to Sri Lanka on April 4 for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. His visit to Colombo is expected to focus on economic cooperation, development projects, and regional security collaboration.
The trip underscores India’s commitment to regional partnerships and fostering deeper ties with its neighbors, reinforcing the importance of BIMSTEC as a platform for economic growth and stability in South Asia and Southeast Asia.
