- Trump announces new tariffs: 26% on India, 34% on China, and others, citing “reciprocal” fairness.
- India charges 52% on US imports, so US sets a lower 26% tariff.
- Tariffs also set for EU (20%), UK (10%), and Japan (24%), with a 10% base import duty on all imports.
US President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on India and China, but he said he is being kind by charging only “half” of what they charge the US. He called these tariffs “discounted reciprocal tariffs.” For India, the US will charge a 26% import duty, while for China, the duty will be 34%.
Trump explained that India charges the US 52% on imports, so the US will charge India 26%, which is half of that. He also mentioned that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a good friend, but Trump told him that India hasn’t been treating the US fairly.
Additionally, President Trump announced tariffs of 20% on goods from the European Union and 10% on goods from the UK. Japan will face a 24% tariff. These tariffs are added on top of a 10% base import duty the US already charges on products from other countries.
Trump made the announcement at the White House with loud applause, saying that other countries have taken advantage of the US for too long. He called April 2nd “Liberation Day,” claiming that America is now reclaiming its industries by imposing these new tariffs.
