- Trump set to announce new tariffs, with India seeking to lower tariffs to avoid conflict.
As US President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs could affect global trade, China has offered to buy more products from India and strengthen trade ties. On Wednesday, China’s ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, encouraged Indian businesses to take advantage of opportunities in China.
He said, “We are ready to work with India to improve trade and other areas, and to import more Indian products that suit the Chinese market.” He also welcomed Indian companies to explore business chances in China, sharing the benefits of China’s growth.
This comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping told India’s President Droupadi Murmu that China and India should work more closely. Xi’s message was part of the 75th anniversary celebration of their diplomatic relations.
India and China are trying to rebuild their relationship after a border clash in 2020. India has set limits on Chinese investments since then, and these restrictions are still in place. In January, India and China agreed to resume direct flights after reaching an agreement in October about patrolling their Himalayan border.
Trump’s Tariff Threats
US President Donald Trump is set to announce new “Liberation Day” tariffs on Wednesday, though he kept the details a secret until the last minute. Trump plans to announce the tariffs in a White House speech at 4:00 pm (2000 GMT), promising that these measures will protect American industries and lead to a “golden age” for the US economy.
India is one of the few countries working to lower tariffs to avoid angering Trump, who has called India a “tariff king” and “tariff abuser.” The two countries are in talks to try to reach an early trade deal and resolve their tariff disagreements.
