Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin during a speech in Rameswaram. PM Modi said that none of the letters he receives from Tamil Nadu ministers are signed in Tamil. He mentioned that if Tamil is truly valued, people should at least sign their names in Tamil.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that the government is working hard to spread Tamil language and culture around the world. His comments come during a time when there is a disagreement between the Tamil Nadu government and the central government led by the BJP. The issue is about the three-language policy in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Stalin has argued that this policy focuses too much on Hindi and threatens the importance of regional languages like Tamil.
He also suggested that the Tamil Nadu government should offer medical courses in Tamil, so even children from poor families could have the chance to become doctors. “I would request the Tamil Nadu government to start medical courses in Tamil so that even children from poor families can achieve their dream of becoming doctors”, said PM Modi.
He also added, “We want to make sure that young people in our country don’t have to go abroad to become doctors. In the last 10 years, Tamil Nadu has opened 11 new medical colleges.” Meanwhile, On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the New Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu. This is the first vertical-lift sea bridge in India. The bridge was inaugurated on the occasion of Ram Navami.
