Nainar Nagendran has been selected as the new president of the Tamil Nadu BJP. He was the only one to file a nomination for the post on Wednesday, so he was chosen without any competition. His name was officially suggested by the outgoing president K. Annamalai, and supported by other senior BJP leaders.
Nagendran is taking charge of the party’s Tamil Nadu unit at an important time, as the BJP is trying to become a stronger political force in the state. Nagendran, who is a BJP MLA from Tirunelveli, was earlier part of the AIADMK. His appointment as the Tamil Nadu BJP President comes at an important time, as the party is trying to rebuild its alliance with the AIADMK.
Even though he has been in the BJP for only eight years (less than the usual ten years needed to become state president), the party has made exceptions in the past for strategic reasons. Nagendran belongs to the Mukkulathor (Maravar) community and is well-accepted by AIADMK leaders. This is expected to help the BJP connect with more people and strengthen ties with the AIADMK.
